Controversial speed boost mechanic gone in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Early after the release of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, players found a nifty technique that would grant a much-needed speed boost via hopping through your boost. Here’s how the technique worked in the Wii U version:

“Apparently, you lose speed faster when in contact with the ground, so jumping repeatedly at the end of a boost will keep you going slightly faster for a slightly longer time.”

This technique instantly became very controversial in places like reddit, where some players equated it with exploiting a bug in the game’s design in order to maintain a lead. Others said that since it’s so easy to do and can be done by anyone, players should learn to “git gud” if they want to compete with those who fire hop. It looks like Nintendo has solved that debate the Switch release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Now that the game is in the hands of reviewers and critics, they’re discovering some changes that Nintendo has made to the game. Players can now switch characters and karts while in an online lobby and battle arenas have been reworked, but it also looks like the fire hopping technique that was so controversial has been removed.

Looks like it was something Nintendo didn’t intend to be part of the game, since it’s no longer present in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In fact, as the video notes if you do fire hop in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you might even be hurting yourself. What do you think? Did you use fire hopping when you were playing Mario Kart 8 online?
