Since the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we’ve gotten a lot of questions from parents and curious gamers who want to know the differences between Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. While it’s true that it’s essentially the same game, there are a number of differences.
With so many people asking questions about the game, we thought we’d take the time to answer them publicly so people can understand the differences between the two games.
Q: Can I transfer save data from MK8 to MK8 Deluxe?
A: No, there’s no way to transfer the save data from Mario Kart 8 on Wii U to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch. They are treated as two separate games and rightly so, as MK8 Deluxe has several improvements over the original game on the Wii U, including all DLC included and a revamped battle mode.
Q: What are the stars at the top that say 0/6 at the end of a race?
A: These are your favorited replays. You can view recent replays in MKTV and save your favorites to keep them from being overwritten. You do this by giving your favorite replays a star at the end of the race.
Q: How many coins do I need to unlock all parts?
A: In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, all the racers come unlocked. However, you unlock new carts and parts at a rate of 50 coins per part until you reach 1,000 coins, after which it requires 100 coins to unlock a new part. You’ll unlock all carts and parts when you pass the 3,100 coin threshold.
Q: How do I get an item faster?
A: Did you know it’s possible to get an item from your box faster than it takes the slot machine animation to play out? It’s true! There’s a sweet spot that allows you to stop the cycle before it completes. If you listen to the slot machine sound repeat for two times and then lress L, you should get your item immediately.
Q: I don’t drift the same in MK8 Deluxe, what changed?
A: Nintendo made some minor improvements to the way drifting is calculated in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe compared to the Wii U game. Soft drifting input was altered so you get less of a boost from smaller angles. You used to get a boost from just a 45°angle, but now you’ll need at least a 70° to get those turbos up quicker.
