Mario Kart 8 Deluxe experiencing online multiplayer issues

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on the Switch a week ago, and so far it’s been well received by gamers and the press. However, it’s not smooth sailing for everyone: a number of players are reporting issues with the online multiplayer portion of the game.

The issues range from severe lag during gameplay, to disconnection issues, and hit detection problems – for example, hitting a player without any effect.

Here’s what one player had to say:

“Far too often I will land a hit on an opponent, usually with a visual cue that it landed, like my character cheering, only for the player to continue on like nothing happened and, in battle mode, no points being given to me. In races I will see coins fly out of a character alongside my cheer, but the driver will continue ahead and win a race that should be secured for me.”

The problems are compounded by the fact that Mario Kart 8 uses peer to peer connection instead of a more robust server-based system. This means that players with bad connections can affect the game far more than if it was hosted on a dedicated server.

Hopefully when Nintendo launches its paid online service this year, it will invest in dedicated servers for games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
