Koei Tecmo’s president briefly discusses the Nintendo NX

We haven’t heard anything official from Nintendo about the NX aside from the fact that it exists, so there’s still a lot of unconfirmed information up in the air. We don’t know if it’s a hybrid console like has been rumored, but Koei Tecmo’s president seems to think it will definitely be a home console of some type. (Duh.)

In a recent interview with 4Gamer, Yoichi Erikawa was asked his opinions about the upcoming release of virtual reality gaming and how it seems to tie into gaming in one spot, rather than smartphone gaming that you can take with you.

4Gamer: On one hand, virtual reality requires special machinery to play, and we feel that the current state of “games” is headed to yet another way of playing. It’s almost as if it’s evolving towards the opposite direction of smartphones, and requires to “only play at that spot,” or something along those lines. Lately it seems that [home] consoles haven’t been doing too well, but is that the case? At least that’s what we’re wondering.

Erikawa: “Actually, I think that it’ll start doing much better. The PlayStation 4 has recently surpassed 2 million units in nationwide sales, and Nintendo announced a new ‘machine’ called the NX. From this point forward, I believe that each company will make clear commitments for these machines.”

Of course, Sony is already committed to the PlayStation 4 as it’s the best-selling console in the world right now. Nintendo’s first party support has always been pretty stellar as well, but if the machine is a hybrid it will be interesting to see how it effects both the home and console markets. While Nintendo’s home console business has faltered a few generations, the handheld market has always been a strong one.
