Just 17% of Switch owners are using the Switch smartphone app

App market analysts at Sensor Tower released a report where they estimate that the Nintendo Switch smartphone companion app was downloaded 780,000 times since launching with Splatoon 2 on July 21.

That means roughly 17 percent of all Switch owners have downloaded the app. And even fewer are actually using it.

The Switch smartphone app was supposed to be a must-have interface, since it’s required when using voice chat in Splatoon 2. But apparently people aren’t bothering with voice chat, given its intricate setup (where a smartphone is required for voice chat).

And it’s not just that people aren’t using the app: those who are using it have given it lots of negative reviews. Reviews are overwhelmingly negative for the app, both on the iOS and Android app stores.

Over 70 percent of people gave a negative review, but that number is flipped in Japan, where over 70 gave it a positive review. Do the Japanese have some features we don’t? Or are they just bigger fan boys?
