Japanese sales: Smash 3DS still on top, Bayonetta 2 launches

Wii U sales

Last week was a huge week for Nintendo in Japan, with Super Smash Bros. on 3DS launching and selling more than 1 million copies within the first week. That trend continues this week, with more than 320k copies sold, meaning Smash for 3DS has managed to dethrone Yokai Watch 2 as the best-selling 3DS game in Japan for the second week running. It’s obvious why Nintendo focused on the 3DS version of Smash, given these sales numbers.

Bayonetta 2 also launched in Japan and manged to net the third spot on the top ten, with just under 40k sold in the first week. It’s not bad for the title, but considering it didn’t help move the Wii U sales needle much at all, we’d say the game was mostly bought by those who already adopted the Wii U system and it won’t be a system seller in Japan. Either way, these are great sales numbers for the Big N, now if they can just get their North American and European launches under their belt.
