Many people have been calling for a price cut to help stimulate the sales of the lagging Wii U console, but Iwata believes the price point isn’t to blame for poor sales. Instead, Iwata attributes poor sales to a lack of software, causing Wii U sales to lose momentum and eventually fall flat. Iwata said that the Wii U Basic sales are proof pricing isn’t an issue, as consumers won’t purchase that version of the Wii U.
“If the price is actually an issue [with Wii U], then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the Basic and Premium versions of the Wii U. The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there.”
It’s good to see Iwata acknowledging that abysmal software support is the main reason why the Wii U isn’t doing well. Pikmin 3 launched just over a week ago here in the United States, despite originally being slated as a launch title. Hopefully this holiday season we’ll see more software and the Wii U sales will pick up.
