HP announces its own Chromebox to compete against ASUS

HP has just announced its own Chromebox. Chromeboxes seem to be a trend that is here to stay at least for a while. ASUS also announced its own Chromebox this week and it seems both devices will be competing against each other fiercely. Which of these will you choose?

HP Chromebox specs

Specs and features are very similar to ASUS’ desktop Chrome OS unit, but it doesn’t seem like HP is offering a lower-end device.

  • 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor (Chromebox for Meetings version)
  • HDMI, DisplayPort and four USB 3.0 ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Wall-mountable (VESA)
  • We don’t know much else about other specs for now. We are not even sure what kind of processor the regular version will have, but it will be a Haswell processor. If we base it on ASUS’ hardware, though, it should be either an Intel Celeron or i3 processor.

    Colors, colors, colors

One department where HP does beat ASUS is in aesthetics. Those who want to have a good-looking Chromebox can go with one of HP’s multiple colors. The HP Chromebox will be available in “Smoke Silver, Ocean Turquoise, Snow White and Twinkle Black.”

Having VESA mounting compatibility will also help some of you keep your set-up more organized. It’s great for those who want to get a Chromebox to use as a living room PC or a business machine.

    Should you get it?

I still can’t see a lot of people going for a Chromebox, but HP is offering some user-friendly devices. Having different colors and powerful specs may entice some of you to buy one of these.

Like I have mentioned in the past, I would consider one of these Chromeboxes if I knew I would never care for portability. Also, if you are looking for a powerful, yet affordable way to run Ubuntu, this might be your best bet.

The HP Chromebox will be released “later this Spring”, launching first in the USA. We will get more details on pricing and availability by then. You can go ahead and sign up to get notified when more details are up, though! What do you guys say – ASUS or HP?
