With the most recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo is asking for suggestions from the Smash community concerning which fighters will make an appearance in future DLC. Mewtwo and Lucas are already on their way, but how many more can we expect to see? That number is a mystery, but Nintendo has updated the main Super Smash Bros. website that showcases newly added characters to include an additional five blank spots.
Each of these spots appears after Mewtwo, so it would seem that Nintendo is initially setting aside five spots for community-chosen characters that are then approved by Sakurai and go into development. Whether there will be more after that is unclear, but it looks like we’ll have five spots to fill in the first round of community-chosen characters. Given Nintendo’s embrace of aftermarket DLC support for their recent games, it seems likely to say that if the community-chosen DLC is well received and not too difficult to implement, we could begin to see batches of new characters.
