Ever wonder how those Google Maps Street View images come to be? Most of them are done with Street View cars, but there are many places where cars simply can’t reach, that is where the Street View Trekker camera-equipped back pack comes into play. And now you might get the chance to use one!
Google does a great job, but there those who know their areas can do a much better job at getting Street View images. This is why the Search Giant is allowing tourism boards, non-profits, government agencies, universities, research organizations or other entities to borrow the Street View Trekker.
These volunteers can then contribute by walking their routes and taking photographs of whatever location they believe would be important to Google Maps users. The first partner happens to be the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. They took images of the most popular sites on the Hawaiian islands, and soon enough we will all be able to enjoy them on Google Maps!
