Last month we heard about a rumored device called Chromekey, an HDMI dongle that would allow users to stream video from mobile devices and computers to any TV. Today Google has announced the handy dongle, which is actually named Chromecast.
The dongle works as a streaming device to all your other devices. You can send videos and music to your TV from any Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices.
Aside from being able to stream video from your devices and computers, Google is also stepping into the screen mirroring world. It is not your traditional mirroring, though. Chromecast can cast your Chrome tab from your computer to the TV. It is not the whole screen, only that one window. In fact, even the URL bar is excluded.
Casting your Chrome tab is still in beta, so expect a few hiccups here and there. But it should be working fairly well, and it can be used with most Windows, Mac and Chrome OS computers.
I am willing to say that this is more exciting than even the new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3! It will take Chrome and Android to a whole other level. The device will be available online starting this afternoon from Google Play, Amazon and Best Buy. And the price? Only $35! That’s right, let’s all go burn that refresh button.
