GameStop testing program to accept retro trade-ins

Sure, that Nintendo 64 was highly exciting when you unwrapped it 20 years ago, but maybe it’s lost its luster now that more modern systems are out. If you’re considering getting rid of any of your retro consoles, you should be aware that GameStop is testing a program that will offer trade-in value to any and all old game console trade-ins, including games and first-party accessories for said consoles.

Supported platforms for the time at launch include the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, and the Nintendo 64. The Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and original PlayStation are also included in this new branch of GameStop’s strategy. As part of the program, GameStop employees are being trained to spot fakes and returns on any purchase can be made within seven days. The consoles come with a 30 day guarantee against defects, so if you happen to buy a retro console that poops out, you do have a 30 day window to return it.

For games that are being sold as part of this deal, new batteries will be put in carts that require them, so you don’t have to worry about replacing the 15+ year old battery yourself. Listings for the games will be available online shortly and each listing will include whether or not the game or console comes with the original box and instructions.

Obviously this is GameStop’s effort to serve the ever-increasing market of gamers who want to re-live experiences of their childhood, by offering systems and games that have been refurbished. What do you think? Will you buy an older console from GameStop once the service is live everywhere?
