GameStop’s quarterly financial call took place yesterday and it revealed some interesting information about the Nintendo Switch. The company used a survey of its Power-up Rewards members to determine how much interest there is in the console. That survey revealed that 27% of those who are aware of the Switch plan on purchasing it, which is about the level of interest in Xbox One at its launch.
Later on in the call, GameStop CEO Paul Raines shared his experience in testing out the Nintendo Switch after a recent trip to Nintendo. Raines believes the broad family appeal of Nintendo’s titles combined with the portability of the console will lead to something that’s “game changing.”
I think it really got tremendous potential as a game changer. We’ll have to wait and see like everything else in this industry, the consumers will vote with their dollars.
GameStop seems cautiously optimistic about the future of the Nintendo Switch and the call wrapped up by mentioning another survey will be held in January after Nintendo has revealed pricing information and launch games to better gauge consumer interest. Overall, GameStop’s impression of the Switch is positive because their marketing research can distinguish between hardcore gamers and those who are only interested in the latest trends.
