Nintendo isn’t giving up on Eternal Darkness for the Wii U. The company just filed to keep its “Eternal Darkness” trademark, which leads us to believe that they haven’t given up on bringing Eternal Darkness to the Wii U. But Nintendo still hasn’t announced anything and refuses to comment on the (potential) game.
At this point, it’s like one of those “will they won’t they” TV shows, where the answer just seems to drag out forever. This time, Nintendo actually filed for a new Eternal Darkness trademark, instead of just changing the existing one, which was filed in 2010.
It could also be a just a matter of Nintendo keeping their trademarks and not letting them expire. After all, it costs only about $300 bucks to apply for a trademark at the USPTO.
Eternal Darkness was originally released over 10 years ago on the GameCube. Developed by Silicon Knights and released on 2002, the survival horror game quickly attracted an avid fan base. Cool fact: Eternal Darkness was the very first Nintendo-published game to get an M-rating.
A spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness, called Shadow of the Eternals, is currently trying to raise funds on Kickstarter for a release on the Wii U and other platforms. The project initially wanted $1.5 million, which turned out to be a stretch. They’ve changed their project and have currently raised $150,000 out of $750,000 needed.
