EA says it focuses on the future, why it doesn’t support Nintendo

In a recent interview, EA Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore explained why his company prefers focusing on titles for smartphones and tablets, rather than the Nintendo 3DS or the PlayStation Vita. According to Moore, the future of handhelds is vague and focusing on smartphones and tablets will provide more favorable results in the long run for the company. This is the same reason why EA no longer produces Wii U games as well.

We were supportive of both of those platforms. But then you’ve got finite resources and you’ve got teams that say, ‘We really think that two or three years from now, these are the platforms that people are going to be consuming games on.’ And you look at the quality of what you can do on phones and tablets… Sometimes strategy is not about what you do but what you don’t do, and you have to make some hard calls when you’ve got only so many people. To my point, we’ve got to be planning for FY 17 and 18. Do you think the Vita and 3DS are going to be around in some shape or fashion by then on a scale level?

According to this logic, Electronic Arts doesn’t see the benefit in developing games for the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, or the Wii U, since it doesn’t think there’s a future in any of these devices. It’s clear EA has bet hard on the console war between Xbox and PlayStation, while focusing their casual gaming efforts on pleasing smartphone gamers, with great games such as Dungeon Keeper for smartphone. Yeah, EA, keep chasing whales who have more money than sense. Meanwhile people who enjoy games will do so without your aggressive monetary-driven tactics.
