How to: Disable Smart Steering in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

If you just purchased Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and haven’t messed with the limited options menu, then you’ve most likely noticed something: You can’t drive off the edge. You haven’t suddenly become a god; this is just the work of Smart Steering, a feature that makes overall driving in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe practically automatic. Though such a feature is useful for allowing players to get a hang of things, these training wheels aren’t exactly necessary for everyone.

If you’re one of the many who doesn’t want Smart Steering enabled, we’ve got your back. Turning it off is ridiculously simple.

What you’ll need:

  • A Nintendo Switch
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Any Nintendo Switch controller

How to turn off Smart Steering

  1. Select any game mode
  2. Choose your character
  3. When you’ve reached the kart-selection screen, press “+” or “-” on your controller.
  4. Press “ZL” (Joy-Cons or Pro Controller) or “SL” (Individual Joy-Con) to disable Smart Steering.

That’s really it. In case you need a video guide, you can refer to our handy video above. If there are any other Mario Kart 8 Deluxe guide you’d like us to make, just let us know in the comments below!
