Cyberpunk RPG Dex comes to Wii U after reaching stretch goal

dex

The Kickstarter for Dex recently reached its Wii U goal, and will arrive on the console two to three months after the initial release on PC, Mac, Linux, and Ouya. For those who haven’t been following Dex, it is a cyberpunk, story-driven sidescrolling RPG with action/stealth gameplay mechanics. The team members from studio Dreadlocks explain more about the game they want to create.

We wanted to create an RPG that featured hacking not as a stand-alone mini-game, but rather as a legitimate solution to game problems, a core gameplay mechanic rooted deeply in the story and level design. This was seen in the old ‘80s cyberpunk games (Neuromancer by Interplay Productions, for example). Since the ‘80s, cyberpunk games have generally lacked that unique feel, that extraordinary cyberpunk aesthetic – no more immersing your whole being in cyberspace, no more cartons of rice left on the table while breaking through the intrusion countermeasures…

It seems that Dreadlocks are on the right track of reaching their lofty vision. The attention to detail is impressive, with the characters and locations of Dex all hand drawn from the studio members themselves. It appears to have a Metroidvania feel with a touch of Deus Ex elements sprinkled in. The game features multiple solutions to obstacles players may encounter along the way through gunfights, silent kills, hacking, or with specialized skills and equipment. This looks like an RPG that truly gives users the freedom to play and explore the game with their own play-style.

Dex certainly looks ambitious, but we’ll have to wait a while longer for the game to arrive. Will you be picking this up when it drops?
