Squids Odyssey is the first cross-buy game on Wii U and 3DS

Today Nintendo of Europe announced a special cross-buy promotion for Squids Odyssey on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Squids Odyssey will be the first title that implements cross-buy between Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, though the details of how it works are a bit convoluted. According to the press release, Nintendo 3DS owners can purchase Squids Odyssey this Thursday and receive a free download code for the Wii U version, provided a Wii U is associated with the same Nintendo Network ID.

Currently there’s no information is the cross-buy promotion is applicable if you happen to purchase the game on the Wii U first, so those interested in this promotion will want to buy it on their Nintendo 3DS. This promotion is currently only available in Europe, though the developers have stated that they hope Nintendo plans on implementing the cross-buy promotion in North America as well.

We are very excited by this promotion as it’s the first time this happens – as far as I know. It’s a proof that Nintendo is making efforts in giving more control to the developer on its pricing and promotions. I’m glad that our players will be able to play on 3DS and WiiU for the price of one game. It’s a shame that it’s only in Europe yet but hopefully this cross buy operation will be appreciated and the technical constraints that prevented it to happen in the US will be fixed.

We’ll let you know if Nintendo of America confirms a similar offer for the North American release of the game.
