Chrome Tabs: CPU Hogs & Animations In The Background

If you’re like me, you’ve always got more than a dozen tabs open on Chrome and sometimes in several different windows as well. Advanced HTML is great and all, but what happens when lots of the tabs you’ve got loaded, including the ones that aren’t currently active, are running animations of various sorts.

The unfortunate answer is that it bogs down CPU. Over on the Chromium Blog they’ve discussed some methods they’ll be implementing in upcoming versions of Chrome – some borrowed from Mozilla – that will allow for smoother animations and less CPU bog by limiting what the background tabs are doing and how often. That’s what I call greasing the gears!

I love that they’ve constantly got rich media and multi-tasking in mind because this is exactly where consumers are moving in terms of web consumption. As Google continues to optimize, Chrome users continue to enjoy. Thanks, Google.
