Bethesda: we’ll bring our games to NX if it “fits from a technical standpoint”

Bethesda develops and publishes some pretty big games: The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, and many others. Getting those games on the upcoming NX console would be a big score for Nintendo.

But Bethesda’s recent comments make us doubt that. Pete Hines, vice-president of Bethesda Softworks, said in an interview that they are definitely looking into making their games available on the NX, but only if the “NX fits that from a technical standpoint”.

“It’s definitely something we will look at; and our philosophy is that we will put our games out on any format that supports the games as we envisage and make them. If the NX fits that from a technical standpoint, and fits the game that a developer in our stable is making, I don’t see why we would not put it out on NX.”

Problem is, the NX will likely be based on the Nvidia Tegra chip and will be a handheld-home console hybrid. What Bethesda is actually saying is that their games are made for x86 systems like the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and if the NX “fits that”, they would support the console. Otherwise, a costly porting process would be needed.

Hines also added that “We talk to Nintendo all the time – we’re pretty well briefed in on what they are doing”. Which is odd, because if they “talk to Nintendo all the time”, they would probably know what the specs of the system are by now.

Suffice to say, we’re not holding our breaths to see Doom on the NX.
