According to Nintendo’s official description of Mario, their famous character is no longer a plumber. Instead, he’s pretty much everything else, but not a plumber.
Here’s how Nintendo describes Mario now on the official profile page on Nintendo Japan:
All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…
Mario started out as a carpenter in his very first video game appearance in the early 80s, and his profession was changed to a plumber with the first Super Mario game (how else do you explain all the pipes in the game?).
Over the years, Mario has been many things… race car driver, golfer, tennis player, soccer player, adventurer, doctor, and of course, a fighter in Smash Bros.
