Already this year we’ve seen numerous rumors about the Nintendo NX, from the possibility of it being a hybrid machine with a portable aspect, to it running Android as the main operating system. Now one analyst believes that despite top Nintendo brass opinions on the recent advancements in VR, Nintendo could be working on their own ‘social VR’ platform.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was notable critical of VR as a platform at E3, where Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Sony’s Project Morpheus and more graced the show floor. Fils-Aime said that VR without a social aspect is just tech, and hinted that’s not something Nintendo is into producing.
What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social. I haven’t walked the floor, so I can’t say in terms of what’s on the floor today, but at least based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun, and it’s not social. It’s just tech.
Financial analyst Digi-Capital believes that this statement by Reggie and another made by Miyamoto don’t mean that Nintendo is dismissing VR entirely, but that they’re going to provide a “Nintendo-like solution” by creating a social VR platform. Of course, this is purely speculation, but the firm believes that Nintendo could be working on a platform designed to take advantage of VR while also containing specs at least equaly to the PS4 or the Xbox One.
While is sounds pretty far-fetched to think that Nintendo would bet another home console on a gimmick, they have been known to do some pretty crazy things. What do you think?
