GameCube games coming to Wii U Virtual Console?

According to a new rumor which seems to come from the latest issue of UK video game publication Retro Gamer, Nintendo will offer GameCube games on the Wii U via the new Wii U Virtual Console. Over the past few months, Nintendo has been repeatedly asked about the GameCube situation on the Wii U, but never confirmed anything. Nintendo did mention something back at E3 2011 about playing GameCube games on the Wii U, but this has since been retracted by the company.

Wii U GamePad and GameCubeBut there is some hope on the horizon: Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said that he would “love to see GameCube games on the Wii U“, however, he added the usual PR lingo “…but we have nothing to announce”. Nintendo will offer N64, NES, and SNES titles on the Wii U via the eShop and Virtual Console. Wii games will be playable as well, with full backwards compatibility of original Wii game discs. It seems like a no-brainer to add GameCube games to the selection.

Retro Gamer is likely making an educated guess — and we’d make the same guess and say that Nintendo will offer GameCube games on the Wii U as downloads some time in the future. The list of quality GameCube titles, especially Nintendo first party games, is impressive to say the least. Furthermore, GameCube games top out at 1.5 GB, which isn’t that bad for a downloadable game — Wii U games on the eShop will be much bigger than that.
