Nintendo has a huge catalogue of franchises and IPs to leverage when it comes to creating new experiences, but its best-selling title is Splatoon, the newest IP on the block. The quarterly financial information for Q3 revealed that Nintendo has a total of nine titles in its catalogue that have managed to achieve more than 1 million sales this year.

Those titles are divided up between Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, but it’s still a respectable catalogue of games.

Wii U

Splatoon – 4.06 million
Super Mario Maker 3.34 million
Mario Kart 8 – 2.13 million (lifetime sales 7.24 million)
Yoshi’s Woolly World – 1.31 million

Nintendo 3DS

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer – 2.93 million
Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – 1.52 million (lifetime sales 11.46 million)
Mario Kart 7 – 1.33 million (lifetime sales 13.03 million)
Super Smash Bros. – 1.16 million (lifetime sales 7.92 million)
The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes – 1.08 million

What’s most surprising about this list of games that managed to achieve 1 million sales this year is how many of them are games from previous years. Both Mario Kart 7 & 8 continue to perform well for the 3DS and the Wii U respectively, while Pokemon and Super Smash Bros. do well for Nintendo’s latest handheld.

We’re a bit surprised to see Splatoon topping this list as we expected Super Mario Maker to take the crown with sales, but Splatoon did have a head start and is massively popular in Japan.
