Yooka-Laylee for Wii U has been cancelled, development moved to Switch

Here’s the latest trailer released by Playtonic Games for Yooka-Laylee. Notice anything different at the end, there? That’s right, the Wii U logo is missing when the screen showcasing the game’s platforms show up. That’s because Playtonic Games has canceled the Wii U version of the game.

That’s problematic for Kickstarter backers who donated over ยฃ2 million to the project in 2015 with the caveat that the game would be released for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U. The game is now slated to be released on April 11, 2017 and the Wii U version has been cancelled.

A new Kickstarter update provides some insight into why Playtonic felt the need to cancel the Wii U version of the game, which cites “unforseen technical issues that unfortunately mean it will be impossible for us to release the game on Wii U as initially planned. The developers say they worked tirelessly for many months in an attempt to solve these technical issues, but in the end, they made the difficult decision to move away from the Wii U.

Playtonic didn’t elaborate on what those technical issues were, but they did state that Kickstarter backers who backed solely for the Wii U version can request a refund, transfer to another platform, or wait for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which will be fully announced next year.
