We still don’t know the official Wii U specs from Nintendo, but we do know that the Wii U is a potent console, and that it’s quite a bit more powerful than current gen systems. And according to Nintendo, the Wii U’s graphical power and performance won’t be too far behind the next gen systems from Sony and Microsoft.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata assured investors that the “Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms, developers could expect very different graphic capabilities of generating HD graphics”. He added that Nintendo is betting on HD visuals this time around with the Wii U, and that the console has sufficient power to generate HD graphics for all sorts of games. The Wii U supports resolutions of up to 1080p, however, first party Wii U games will only support 720p at launch.
The latest round of Wii U specs rumors indicate that the console features a tri-core CPU and about 1.5 GB of RAM, with an unspecified GPU from AMD. We’ll have to wait and see how the specs compare to the current gen systems once they become official. As for Sony and Microsoft, both are expected to release their next-gen console in 2013.
