While we get constant updates on the number of Wii U games and software sold in Japan, getting those numbers for the United States is a little bit harder. NPD Group doesn’t share concrete numbers but on a monthly basis. However, from that we can see that Wii U software is up 45% year over year, meaning many more games are being sold compared to this time last year.
Super Smash Bros. has a life time sales rate of 1.4 million for both digital and retail, with 90k of those sales coming in last month. Smash 3DS has 2.1 million in lifetime sales, with 90k coming in January. It’s nice to see such great numbers and despite only 63.7k consoles sold in that same period, that’s still a 30% increase over the same time period last year.
The Wii U is chugging along, but it’s still got a ways to go before it catches up to the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4 in terms of month over month sales. The PlayStation 4 was the best selling console of January, followed by the Xbox One which we know sold more than 140k. No concrete numbers were given for those consoles, but they’re effectively selling double what the Wii U is selling. Either way, Nintendo has done a good job in making sure there is tons of great software for their system, which shows in the software sales for the month of January.
