Wii U was the fourth best selling console in Japan in 2014

Japanese publication Famitsu recently revealed total console sales for 2014 in Japan, and the Wii U came in at 4th, with a total of 604,000 units sold in Japan in 2014. The Wii U was surpassed by the PS4 and Vita, and of course the 3DS, which remained the best selling console in the country.

Yesterday we reported that Nintendo represented half of the top 100 best selling games in Japan in 2014, with the Wii U having two games in the top 10. But when it comes to console sales, Wii U’s numbers weren’t that impressive in 2014. Total Wii U sales to date in Japan are at 2.1 million.

Nintendo was also the top publisher in the country in 2014 by far. The company sold over 8 million games in Japan. Here’s the list of the top 5 publishers in Japan in 2014. Note that the 5th biggest publisher, The Pokemon Co., is also owned by Nintendo.
