Wii U sales increase thanks to Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the best reviewed games of all time, and it’s so good that even Wii U sales are increasing thanks to it.

That’s according to GameStop, who says that sales of pre-owned Wii U systems have increased and that they are seeing “a lot” of pre-owned Wii U sales sold with a copy of Breath of the Wild.

“Breath of the Wild has reinvigorated sales of the Wii U with Nintendo Switch being sold out at so many retailers. The Switch launching and Zelda launching completely racked up the Wii U market”, GameStop’s Eric Bright told investors.

Nintendo stopped making Wii U consoles late last year, so any increase in Wii U sales is largely pre-owned inventory or some units that haven’t been sold yet.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild was originally meant to be released on the Wii U years ago, but after several delays, Nintendo chose to use it as a launch title to propel the Switch to a good start.

And boy has the game done just that: recently, we reported that Breath of the Wild has an (almost) 1:1 attach rate with the Switch, meaning that pretty much anyone who purchased a Switch also purchased Zelda.
