Developer: Wii U is much more indie friendly than Wii

It’s not secret that the original Wii console was not popular among indie developers. Nintendo had a bunch of restrictions on the console, from games that had to fit into a very small size, to a lengthy certification process, to not paying developers unless their games made more than $7,000. The list goes on, but Nintendo seems to have learned the lessons and taken a new approach with the Wii U.

Chasing Aurora Wii UIndie developer Martin Pichlmair, who’s behind the Wii U eShop title Chasing Aurora, said that the Wii U is “more indie developer friendly that the Wii ever was”. He added that Nintendo was doing everything they can to make the Wii U a much more open console.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen indie developers praise the Wii U. Little Inferno developer Tomorrow Corporation said that Nintendo was an “amazing partner to work with”, and the guys behind Trine 2 said that Nintendo was supportive of indie developers and that Nintendo is taking online very seriously this time around.

Chasing Aurora, developed by Broken Rules, is a 2D adventure game where the player navigates a bird through the mountains. The game will be a Wii U launch title, alongside 6 other indie games on the eShop. There are already over a dozen Wii U indie games that are in development at the moment.
