Wii U emulator can now play games in 4K resolution

Cemu is a notable Wii U emulator that has been in development for some time now, but just yesterday the developers showcased Cemu 1.7.0. This new version is notable because it includes the ability to load custom graphics packs for certain games, allowing players to push beyond 1080p and into 4K.

Those who have backed the Cemu Patreon have access to this update immediately. As you can see in the video above, the results are pretty interesting. The dev team has expressed frustration in the past with getting games to natively re-render at higher than intended resolutions, so this is an especially interesting feat for the team.

These graphic packs work like mods for a handful of games, allowing several aspects to be tweaked including shadows, anti-aliasing, and yes even resolution. So far, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Super Mario 3D World have gotten the 4K treatment, which you can see in the video above.

The development team plans on releasing these 4K graphics packs to the public on January 16th.
