Walmart is cancelling some gold Mario amiibo pre-orders

It looks like both Walmart and Nintendo have learned nothing from the Lucario Toys R Us fiasco, in which Toys R Us took way too many pre-orders for the supply they were given and had to cancel on numerous people who thought they had secured one of the elusive exclusive amiibos for themselves. Walmart is now repeating history by doing the same thing, with several people receiving emails this morning that informed them their pre-order of the gold Mario amiibo has been cancelled. Here’s the email received:

Gold Mario Amiibo – Walmart Exclusive (Wii U) 1 $12.96 $12.96

I wish I could say this were surprising, but given how the Toys R Us Lucario amiibo was handled, it’s not really a surprise. Nintendo needs a better way to estimate demand for amiibos and honoring these retailer exclusive deals seems to cause more trouble than its worth. Were you able to successfully pre-order the gold Mario amiibo? If so, you might want to check your email to make sure you’re not one of the customers getting shafted.
