Super Smash Bros Wii U just started development

Super Smash Bros Wii U
Don’t hold your breath for a Super Smash Bros Wii U game just yet. That’s according to Nintendo designer Masahiro Sakurai, who is heading the game. Sakurai says Super Smash Bros Wii U was his first game that was announced before it went into development, he told Nintendo Power. “We’ve just taken what you could call the first step of the process” Sakurai said, and because of that, he fears that, “players will be forced to wait even longer than they expect to. Please be patient”.

Nintendo is known for taking their time with game development, opting for quality instead of quantity. About a year ago, Sakurai told the same publication that a Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS title is potentially “years away“. Little is known about the new Smash Bros title, other that there will be some kind of connection between the Wii U and 3DS versions.

For comparison, Super Smash Bros Brawl came out two years after the Wii launched, which could mean we probably have to wait until 2014 or later for Super Smash Bros Wii U. Nintendo doesn’t just take their time with their games, but also likes to spread out their major franchises over the life span of a console. But don’t worry — while we wait for a Smash Bros Wii U game, Nintendo has plenty of franchises to fill in the gap: Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario, Mario Kart, to name just a few.
