Today Nintendo revealed that Super Smash Bros. has taken the record for the most pre-ordered title to date. The record was previously held by Mario Kart 8, which released earlier this year.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced the record, also adding that he believes the massive demand for the game will drastically improve the number of Wii U units sold this holiday season after the game launches on November 21 in America.

The launch of Mario Kart 8 has essentially doubled our Wii U sales year-on-year. Our expectation is that the sell-through for Smash is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with Mario Kart 8. We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic.

Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software. When you have a robust library of games, that’s when consumers jump in.

It’s nice to see that many consumers are responding well to the impending release of Super Smash Bros. Do you know anyone who is buying a Wii U specifically for this release?
