Nintendo’s investor call yesterday yielded a lot of interesting information about the company, including the fact that Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 weren’t the chart toppers that Nintendo hoped they would be. Flagging sales of the Wii U means Nintendo needs a good hit to increase interest in the console and Iwata believes that Super Mario 3D World is that title.

“The key title that is going to drive this year’s year-end sales season is Super Mario 3D World, the latest installment in the Super Mario series that is set to be released in November.

“I feel that the trailers we have released so far already provide consumers with a taste of the quality of the game, but this is indeed a compelling product that provides both single and multi-player gameplay to a wide range of consumers from novice to experienced players of Mario action games.”

From the statement given to investors, it seems that Iwata is proud of the information they’ve given on the game so far, as he mentions the trailers that we’ve seen since E3. It should be noted that we’ve seen no TV advertisements for Super Mario 3D World yet, which comes out on November 22nd, the same day the Xbox One will be released.

If Iwata is serious about this title turning around the sales dilemma that the Wii U has faced this far, a strong marketing campaign should be one of the first focuses for the company. Mario is an important figure for Nintendo and those who enjoy their products, but when trying to capture interest, gameplay needs to be highlighted effectively.
