Splatoon will be launching on Wii U in May

During today’s Nintendo Direct, Bill Trinen gave us a much better look at the upcoming multiplayer shooter, Splatoon. The game will have a central hub area that each player starts in. It looks like a city block, with shops and things for you wander around in. Players can enter multiplayer immediately by heading to the large tower, but there are also numerous little shops that sell upgrades and equipment for your characters.

Players will generate currency by playing online. With that currency, you can enter the various shops and buy new guns, hats, shirts, and shoes. There are hundreds of items and each of the clothing items has a specific set of stats, so you can customize your character according to the playstyle you like.

Additionally, guns are not purchased individually, but as a set. Each set of guns has a Main Weapon, Sub Weapon, and a Special Weapon. The main weapon will be your first line of defense against other Inklings, while your sub weapon is designed to make it harder for enemies to navigate the levels. Special weapons have a limited number of uses per match, as they must be charged and each special weapon has a unique effect.

The game will be launching on the Wii U in May, but Nintendo did not give a specific date or price.
