Analysis: Splatoon delivers “near flawless 60 fps”

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry — the guys who go in depth with a game’s technology and graphics — recently ran an analysis of the upcoming Wii U shooter Splatoon, and they came away quite impressed.

Their analysis concluded that Splatoon delivers “near flawless 60 frames per second” gameplay. Despite being still in development, Splatoon showed great polish when put on the test bed. As Digital Foundry’s John Linneman said:

“Even in its unreleased state, Splatoon delivers a near flawless 60fps update across the board with only the occasional dropped frame detracting from the fluidity – mostly unnoticeable in action, and something that could well be ironed out in the game’s final run of optimisation”

However, the steady 60 fps does come at a drawback: Splatoon only runs at 720p (upscaled to 1080p), and its graphics are quite simple: it doesn’t even have anti-aliasing to smooth out the edges. As the analysis states, distant objects in the game appear “jagged while finer details are lost to shimmering”.

Splatoon is a brand new Nintendo IP and Wii U exclusive, and differentiates itself from all the other shooters on the market: instead of regular weapons, players are equipped with paint guns, which gives the game a unique and colorful style (no surprise, since it’s got paint guns).

Splatoon will be released on the Wii U on May 29 in the US and Europe, and on May 28 in Japan. So far the game has received a lot of positive feedback from those who have tried it, and looks to be the first big Wii U hit of 2015. Splatoon will also be playable this weekend at Wondercon.
