Sony and Microsoft experiencing DDOS attacks over the holidays

Over the past few days, Sony and Microsoft have experienced massive DDOS attacks from a group called The Lizard Squad. The PlayStation Network was down for several days, leaving those who got a PS4 for Christmas nothing to do but wait. Microsoft’s Xbox Live service was down for a day as well.

Sony appears to have been hit the hardest, with its network going offline for two straight days. It was just earlier today that Sony managed to restore the service for its members. Even then, there are still some players reporting inability to connect to online services.

This was a massive and coordinated attack that managed to bring down the networks of two of the biggest companies in the world. What’s interesting is that this happened before to Microsoft and especially Sony — the same group, the same type of attack. EA was also under attack, as its EA Online servers went down and took Battlefield 4 offline.

However, it appears that Nintendo was left out of all this. Either Nintendo managed to fend off the attacks, or the Lizard Squad simply didn’t care enough to go after the Wii U and 3DS.

While the PS4 and Xbox One are Wii U’s main competition, we can’t help but feel for those gamers affected by this. It must suck to get a brand new console or game for Christmas, only to find out that you can’t play it online.
