Sonic Team head says he doesn’t plan to stop making Sonic for home consoles

Sega has had something of a rough year. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was released last year and nearly everyone critically panned the release, citing numerous bugs and gameplay that just wasn’t fun. The game currently holds a 32 score on MetaCritic, making it one of the worst Wii U games ever released to the public. Because of poor sales, Sega announced a restructure of its business assets, with more focus on computer and mobile gaming, as those products can be shipped digitally and don’t need a physical release.

This worried many Sonic fans, as some believed this was Sega’s careful way of saying they wouldn’t produce a Sonic game for home consoles anymore. That’s a fear that can be laid to rest, however, as Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says he doesn’t plan on retiring Sonic from home consoles just yet. In a recent interview, Mr. Iizuka was asked if Sonic would be moved to smartphone games only.

4Gamer:
Actually , is there a possibility that the future of Sonic the Hedgehog is going to shift for smart phone?

Iizuka-san:
Currently we don’t. Now this product only, select the smart phone as a friendly platform to the user’s, just say F2P and that was suitable for there. Personally, I don’t plan to stop Sonic for home-video game consoles. Don’t worry about them! And enjoy!

While it’s nice to see that the head of Sonic Team doesn’t see the lovable hedgehog going full mobile just yet, what do you think? Have you lost faith in the Sonic franchise or will you give any future Sonic game another shot?
