SNES Classic launch was better than the Switch in Japan

The first actual sales numbers for the SNES Classic, or the Super Famicom as it’s known in Japan, are in. And they’re great numbers: the console sold an impressive 360,000 units during its first three days on the market in Japan.

By comparison, the Switch sold 330,000 units during its first three days on the market in Japan. Both consoles also sold out during their launch. And for another comparison, the Wii U sold just over 300,000 units in Japan during its launch.

It’s not an entirely fair comparison though, because the Switch costs more than 3 times as much as the SNES Classic, and the SNES Classic is more of an “impulse buy” for consumers.

Nevertheless, those are impressive launch numbers, and it’s likely that the console sold just as well in the West. It has to, because it’s sold out everywhere.

The Super Famicom also sold more than the original NES Classic (Famicom Mini in Japan), which sold just over 260,000 units during launch.
