New changes for previous Smash Bros. fighters

Shiek

In today’s Nintendo Direct that focused on Super Smash Brothers, game director Masahiro Sakurai outlined some changes that would be coming to veteran fighters of the series.

General

  • Every character who used to change forms no longer does so
  • Many characters have been powered up, and players are encouraged to try them all

Samus

  • Samus no longer transforms into Zero Suit Samus after using the zero laser

Zero Suit Samus

  • Zero Suit Samus is now her own character
  • New jet boots add power and speed to the character, helping balance her out

Zelda

  • No longer transforms into Sheik
  • She has a new down-special move that summons a phantom, a ghostly knight from the DS Zelda games
  • This new move can be used either offensively or defensively

Sheik

  • No longer transforms into Zelda
  • Moves have been powered up
  • New side-special attack: “Burst Grenade”, in which Sheik throws a grenade that explodes once a pin is pulled
  • New down-special  attack: “Bouncing Fish”, which is an acrobatic kick technique that uses the heel of the foot

Kirby

  • New technique “Hammer Flip”. Press and hold the hammer attack button to charge up the hammer. If hammer flip is charged too long, Kirby will start taking damage
  • New final smash: “Ultra Sword”, which has kirby dealing lightning fast attacks to enemies who are trapped by the move, similar to Ike’s old final smash

King DeeDeeDee

  • Now throws gordos instead of Waddle Dees
  • Can toss and grab gordos in quick succession

Lucario

  • The effects of Lucario’s aura are now more noticeable and more powerful than in Brawl
  • Lucario’s aura attacks do even more damage the more damage Lucario has taken
  • Powering up too much can cause overcompensation
  • Lucario can now mega-evolve, though the method isn’t stated
  • When mega-evolved, Lucario’s aura attacks always do max damage

Pikmin and Olimar

  • Olimar can now only have 3 Pikmin following him at a time
  • Pikmin are always plucked in this order: Red > Yellow > Blue > White > Purple
  • It’s much easier to keep track of pikmin due to their reduced number, but management becomes harder
  • Olimar’s new recovery move is “Winged Pikmin”, which summons flying pikmin to carry olimar to safety. The more pikmin olimar has with him when using this move, the less distance the flying pikmin can cover

Pit

  • Pit can no longer glide
  • Pit’s moves have been powered up, and he has been given new abilities (not all were named)
  • Instead of being able to fly freely, Pit’s new recovery move has him flying in a straight line, similar to Fox and Falco’s recovery moves
  • New final smash: “Three Sacred Treasures”. This final smash shows pit shooting multiple projectiles at enemies and calling down huge beams of light to do damage.

Charizard

  • Charizard is now his own character
  • Charizard can mega-evolve, but nothing besides a color change was detailed

That’s it! Those are all the changes to returning fighters that were mentioned. What are some of your favorites? Some of your least favorites?
