Mr. Shifty suffers from serious frame rate problems [Patch coming]

UPDATE 2:

A quick second update. TinyBuild has informed me that the patch will be available before Mr. Shifty’s launch on PS4 and Xbox One in several weeks:

“We will try to get this fixed ASAP, definitely before the game gets released on PS4 and Xbox One in several weeks!”

UPDATE:

After publishing our story, we reached out to tinyBuild again to see if Team Shifty had any further comments on a possible Mr. Shifty patch on Switch. It seems like a patch will be coming, but it will “take longer” due to the coding:

We were able to fix the frame rate issues on PC, it will take longer time to fix this on Switch since itā€™s different coding.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Earlier this week, we debuted out newest series “NT Live” with a live stream of this week’s hot, Nintendo Switch eShop release: Mr. Shifty. During the stream I played through about what I believed to be the first half of the game. Overall, my impressions of Mr. Shifty were and mostly still are pretty positive. It’s a really fun game. Up until that point, I had experienced a few moments where my game would freeze. The music still played, but for about a second, the action on screen remained in limbo. With a fast-paced game like Mr. Shifty, that second can really screw up your momentum as you’re blinking in and out of incoming bullets.

I initially wrote this problem off as a very slight inconvenience: it was there for sure, but it wasn’t exactly frequent enough to be called a problem or serious issue. After that halfway point, that changes.

What was initially a fun game has started to become a slog.Ā As Mr. ShiftyĀ begins introducing more and more explosions and enemies into levels, these elements make the game come to a halt rather frequently. These problems kept getting worse until I reached the final level where it became unbearable. There were far too many moments where I died because of a freeze or the game started slowing down.

These problems kept getting worse until I reached the final level where it became unbearable. There were far too many moments where I died because of a freeze or the game started slowing down. At this point, I’ve put Mr. Shifty down. I’ll keep coming back occasionally, but not as much as I would if these problems were fixed.

I contacted tinyBuild, the game’s publisher, to ask about the frame rate issues and see if they’re working with Team Shifty on a patch. Here’s what they had to say:

“Weā€™ve seen this bug in a small amount of users devices, but it didnā€™t come up during our testing or Nintendo testing. If this becomes a mass-spread issue, we will think of something!”

We made the video above to highlight how big of an issue this is.
