One of the most often requested publishers for the Wii U virtual console is Sega, especially considering many people loved playing Sega Genesis games on their Wii. Many figured since Sega had no problems bringing its Genesis collection to the Wii that it would be doing the same for the Wii U, but that’s not the case. Last week over Twitter, Yosuke Okunari said to a fan that Sega has no plans to bring its games to the Wii U virtual console.

In a statement to Eurogamer today, Sega clarified that position that they’re not planning on working on virtual console games right now, but they’re not ruling out the possibility of doing so in the near future.

Sega would like to clarify a statement that was issued over Twitter. All options are currently on the table concerning development for the Wii U Virtual Console. Although there are no immediate plans, this does not negate the possibility and exploration of creating for this platform.

Sorry guys, if you were looking forward to running Sonic 2 on your Wii U, you’ll still have to do it in Wii compatibility mode for now.
