Sakurai comments on why Smash characters are left out

With the Super Smash Bros. 3DS demo firmly in the hands of fans worldwide, many people have been left wondering why certain characters from previous titles were omitted. Perhaps the most glaring example of a fan favorite is the Ice Climbers, characters that were available in Super Smash Brothers Melee but will not be making an appearance in either Super Smash Bros. for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS. Sakurai says that the data from Melee is so old that the characters will have to be built from scratch, which led to the decision to leave them out for now instead of delaying the game to include them.

It makes sense when we look at the development process this way, and with how Nintendo is currently embracing DLC in Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8, perhaps we’ll see new characters added to Super Smash Bros. through patches and updates instead of having them left out of the roster entirely.
