The Saints Row franchise has seen one of the most dramatic overhauls of a series in gaming. It started off as a humble Grand Theft Auto clone in the first iteration, before devolving into the wacky mess that is Saints Row 4. They’re fun if you’re up for some crazy mischief-making, so it’s interesting to see that the creative director of the original Saints Row was reportedly working on an open world Wii U game that was cancelled just a day before production. The information popped up on Twitter today and we have no confirmation from the man himself, but if true the Wii U may have lost a great open world game.

The tweet says the project was canned by Nintendo, so perhaps they weren’t fond of the direction the game was headed. While Saints Row 1 is the tamest of those games, there was still plenty of violence and questionable ethical decisions to be made in the game. Still, it’s hard to blame that for the reason of the cancellation, since Nintendo published Bayonetta 2 and Devil’s Third will be coming to the Wii U at some point in time. Maybe they just didn’t feel like the project was a good fit for them.
