Rumor: future Switch hardware refresh might have 8 GB of RAM

According to reports, Nintendo is considering a hardware refresh for the Switch console. The first indication came from a reference to a new SoC (System on a Chip) that was revealed during the recent firmware update.

A Twitter user analyzed that data and concluded that this is likely a new hardware update Nintendo is working on and that the biggest change will be a RAM upgrade from the current 4 GB to 8 GB.

“5.0.0 included hw bringup for a new SoC called Mariko. nvidia calls it t214 (it’s a fork of tegra X1), it has a custom nintendo bootrom, new key material, new pmic (and new pcb!). however it will probably look identical from outside.”

Nintendo previously hasn’t ruled out hardware upgrades to the Switch to extend its life span.
