The Wii U is lagging behind the PS4 and Xbox One, and has been struggling on the sales front for over a year. And while recent Wii U hits such as Mario Kart 8 have increased sales of the console, many still aren’t sure just how long a lifespan the console has.
Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime is not one of those people. In a recent interview with Kotaku, Reggie said that the Wii U “has a very long life ahead if it”, and added that there is great content coming to the console that will “help define the platform”. He also denied Nintendo starting over with a new consoles, confirming that they are sticking with the Wii U for the long run.
Reggie mentioned the 3DS, which had a great turnaround with games such as Mario kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, and he believes that the same will happen to the Wii U eventually. Reggie believes that recently released Mario Kart 8 and the upcoming Hyrule Warriors and Super Smash Bros U will have a big effect on Wii U sales worldwide. Recently, Nintendo’s Scott Moffitt said that “the Wii U is at a turning point” when it comes to system sales.

These games will increase the Wii U install base, which in return will attract more third party developers, according to Reggie. The Wii U has sold 6 million units worldwide as of March 2014. By comparison, the PS4 has sold around 8 million units, and the Xbox One around 4.5 million, according to VGChartz.
