Project Cars has been delayed on the Wii U three times now, but developer Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Namco still reassured us that the game would be released later this year.
The game launched earlier this month on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, after many delays, but at least the game was released. It doesn’t appear that this will be the case with the Wii U.
Slightly Mad Studios studio head Ian Bell recently revealed that the team is struggling with the Wii U version, and can’t even get it to run at 720p at 30 frames per second (the PS4 version runs at 1080p/60fps).
Bell said about the Wii U version of Project Cars (on the game’s official forums):
“OK I’ll come clean. At the moment we’re running at about 23FPS at 720p on the WiiU. We’re awaiting/hoping for more of a hardware announcement at E3. Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we’re looking to Nintendo’s next console. I suppose if they don’t announce something at E3 or soon after we will have a go at it.”
He went on with the bad news:
“We could reach a fairly solid 30 FPS on Wii U but it might take a hell of a lot of work. On the other hand, about halfway through us finishing, Nintendo might announce a new console (I have zero knowledge on this BTW but I’ve heard ‘rumors’). Our work might just be the best thing that ever hit that new console in the driving sim genre.
So we’re playing a waiting game at the moment and yes, economics do come in to it.”
Which means the game is doing so bad on the Wii U, they are hoping that Nintendo will announce the NX at E3 so they can officially cancel the Wii U version and develop it on the NX.
At this point, developer Slightly Mad Studios is better off just cancelling Project Cars on the Wii U. With these last statements from the head of the studio, it’s all but confirmed that Project Cars is dead on the Wii U.
The Wii U community has been jerked around long enough. Just cancel the game already.
