Nintendo: Switch is a new platform, not a successor to Wii U or 3DS

Nintendo clarified a few things about the new Switch console during a recent interview with Japanese publication Famitsu. The biggest “clarification” was that they don’t consider the Switch to be a direct successor to the Wii U or the 3DS.

Instead, Nintendo calls the Switch a brand new platform. They also confirmed that they will release a 3DS successor at some point in the future, confirming that the Switch isn’t there to replace the 3DS.

Of course, Nintendo might claim that the Switch isn’t a successor to the Wii U, but the Wii U will be phased out just as the Switch launches.

Also, Nintendo said that the Switch will not be able to play Wii U discs, although they didn’t say whether there will be Wii U backwards compatibility through downloads.
