Today Nintendo announced that the 8GB Wii U Basic set is stopping production in Japan. The 8GB Basic set has never been as popular as the 32GB Deluxe set and the fact that Nintendo’s product lineup site now lists the 8GB as “stopping production shortly” means the 8GB version will soon become much more rare. We’ve had several rumors about production of the 8GB model ceasing after disappearing from store shelves in the United States, but Nintendo never confirmed it until now.

Nintendo has not stated whether they plan to kill the 8GB version in the US and Europe, but given the 8GB has officially met its death in Japan it seems likely. If you’re partial to the white Wii U, don’t fret as Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing a 32GB premium model in white within the region. It’s likely that this SKU will replace the 8GB basic SKU all over the world, given a bit of time.
